History of Scrum: How It All Started

The concept of Scrum began in the early 1990s, evolving as a response to rigid, document-heavy software development methods like the Waterfall model.

Scrum was officially introduced in 1995 by Ken Schwaber and Jeff Sutherland, who presented it at the Business Object Design and Implementation Workshop at OOPSLA (Object-Oriented Programming, Systems, Languages & Applications). Inspired by a 1996 Harvard Business Review article, "The New New Product Development Game" by Takeuchi and Nonaka, Schwaber and Sutherland adopted the term "Scrum" from rugby, where a team works together to move forward.

They developed the Scrum framework as a lightweight, flexible approach to manage complex software projects. It focused on collaboration, transparency, and incremental progress. Instead of detailed upfront planning, Scrum promotes working in short cycles (Sprints), holding regular daily stand-ups, and continuous feedback to adapt and improve.

Since then, Scrum has become the most widely used Agile methodology, revolutionizing how software and business projects are delivered across industries. Today, Scrum Masters are vital in helping teams adopt Agile mindsets and drive successful product outcomes.
